PLAY EQUIPMENT FOR EDUCATIONAL AND INNOVATIVE OUTDOOR SPACES
By bringing together the expertise of landscape architects, agronomists, and educators, and utilising natural materials alongside innovative products, outdoor spaces are transformed into vibrant environments. These areas not only enhance educational experiences but also serve as exciting venues for exploration and physical activity, ready to be enjoyed throughout the year.
A now outdated belief among adults is that outdoor spaces are merely a source of distraction, unsuitable for developing skills or educational experiences beyond physical activity. Often, concerns about potential injuries or the risk of damaging clothing and appearances hinder proposals and choices.
The Outdoor education philosophy, which originated in the UK and quickly gained traction in Germany and the Netherlands, is now making its mark in Italy through the initiatives of Romm3.0. This approach challenges these conventional beliefs.
In fact, it is precisely this element of distraction—enhanced by emotion—that solidifies our memories of outdoor activities. Numerous studies and research confirm this perspective. From this understanding, we have developed our offerings, featuring projects and materials for comprehensive outdoor activities. These include sensory and cognitive experiences, as well as strategic opportunities for physical development. We strive to move beyond the cliché of simply climbing up and down a slide as the only predictable activity.
In 2013, Classroom3.0 participated in the national conference on Outdoor Education in Bologna, organised by the Municipality of Bologna and the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the local university.
The topic was explored from multiple angles, with contributions from educators, landscape professionals, paediatricians, psychologists, psychomotor specialists, and legal experts, all highlighting the importance of outdoor activities from their various expertise.
We presented a paper at the conference discussing the rethinking and positive impacts that the choice of innovative materials, aligned with this approach, can have on the design and setup of outdoor spaces. The philosophy we embrace is encapsulated in the character of Agata, an acronym that represents the five senses stimulated in children by suitable and sensory-rich environments:
Listen, Look, Smell, Touch, Taste.
